It is an idea that applies to many areas in life, leadership being a good example. But I personally don’t think this approach is conducive to increased readership necessarily, or great writing for that matter. Sorry if this is an unpopular opinion, but the most acclaimed writers happen to write for themselves. Outstanding writing is also inherently selfish, the same way any art form is. It is the joy of creation that keeps the creator going and if it is great, readers will come. Quantity does matter along with quality, but ultimately people (should) write because it is like breathing to them. It is because they need to express themselves, even their most mundane thoughts, and to do so beautifully. Writing gives them a purpose and clarity. The gain is all theirs, the readers joining them for the ride - sometimes even as voyeurs.

Or that is how it used to be once upon a time.

Appreciate your thoughts and I agree - writers write because we must. But when we share our thoughts in a way that the reader can receive them, then we make a connection. It’s this “other-focused” mindset that is at the center of effective communication.
